Issue 1 of the new Persephone Pamphlet for Autumn/Winter 2024 is now available.

A digital version is available to view or download here; alternatively, to order a paper copy is free within the UK, although to send it overseas we do charge for the cost of shipping.

The design of the Persephone Pamphlet is inspired by Mary Wollstonecraft's A Vindication of the Rights of Woman (1792). Wollstonecraft lived a few steps away from the Persephone bookshop, at 25 Milsom Street, during the late 1770s when Edgar Buildings was newly built. She was only nineteen and working as a lady's companion so had not yet published anything, but we like to think that it was during her walks around the area that she planned her visionary treatise.

Meanwhile, the layout of the Persephone Pamphlet deliberately echoes that of a Persephone book with Munken Pure paper, page size 132 x 198 and the same font, Baskerville. However, on pp 20-28 we are experimenting with a different font called Mrs Eaves. A variant (some would say a more feminine variant) of Baskerville, which dates from the 1750s, this was designed by Zuzana Lick in 1996 and is named after Sarah Eaves, John Baskerville's second wife. In other words, a revival of an eighteenth century typeface for a revival of an eighteenth century print tradition.

(Every past edition of the Persephone Biannually, which the Persephone Pamphlet has replaced, is available in our archive here.)
